What you should know about the Flu
The flu is a very interesting illness that will put you in the bed as quick as anything else. This illness is not only contagious, but the flu claims the lives of 36,000 people each year in the United States. Over 200,000 people each year are hospitalized from the flu and depending on the vaccine and local press each year; five to twenty percent of the American population will have the flu vaccine. Flu shots are to protect you from getting the flu each year but many believe health problems develop due to having this shot so some would-be recipients now opt out of receiving the vaccine. Flu symptoms include the high fever, headache and fatigue, dry cough and sore throat, muscle aches and sometimes severe stomach aches. Flu complications can become serious medical problems such as bacterial pneumonia and other health problems. Flu can spread so rapidly because many adults can spread the flu bug before they even begin to have symptoms. If you choose to stop the flu from affecting you, then you should have the vaccination in October or November to try to ward off the flu and to decrease your chances for falling ill with the flu. At high risk, include people over the age of 65, people who have the HIV virus, pregnant women and young children and people who are already suffering from respiratory problems. Health care workers are at high risk but usually get vaccinated because they are aware of the risks and the fact that they are certainly in areas where the flu is dominate. The flu can strike communities and literally become a problem or epidemic for locations around the globe. If you think you have the flu, it is best to try to stay inside and care for yourself but do contact your doctor for recommendations on how to treat the illness. If the flu scare is out and rampant, a family doctor may just call in Tamiflu for you so that you don’t bring the flu bug into the doctor’s office. Call and find out what you should do before scheduling an appointment.
