Aging People With The Flu
One reason so many elderly people are encouraged to have flu shots is because of their inability to ward of the flu should it strike. Aging individuals stand a much better chance of not catching the flu if they have the vaccination which is highly recommended for the aging adult population. Flu vaccinations are reserved for the elderly people among us when the flu vaccine is limited. The reason for this, of course, is because so many people who are aging have many other health risks and don’t need the added risk of having the flu. The flu can cause aging adults to experience deadly respiratory complications especially if the person’s respiratory system is already compromised. There is unfortunately, a growing concern surrounding the flu vaccine and it is over the fact that many people believe that the flu vaccine is contributing to Alzheimer’s and other health factors. This gives some aging adults an excuse not to take the vaccine and ultimately causes ongoing health problems for these adults who refuse the vaccination and then ultimately end up with the flu. Aging individuals with the flu need additional care when they are sick and bed-ridden and flu prone elderly adults are less likely to bounce back when they are stricken with the flu. Tamiflu and other medications take much longer to help the ailing adult who already has failing health. Nursing homes ask their residents to take the vaccination for the flu because if one of the residents of the nursing home ends up with the flu then it causes a break down in the health care facility as a whole. What can happen is usually what will happen if one elderly person ends up with the flu. Ultimately, all of the residents of the health care facility end up with the dreaded flu bug. Flu symptoms often appear after a person has actually had the flu for several days. What can happen is that elderly residents in a nursing home can and will be exposed to many people before they realize they have the flu. The elderly residents with their immune systems already compromised will end up very sick and the situation can get pretty intense in the nursing homes where the flu is rampant. Before the flu season hits, encourage all elderly people who are capable of having the flu vaccination to do so and take precautions to keep the aging population indoors when public places are prone to experience a high turn-over of people. This flu season shouldn’t have to keep every one on edge. Simply, prepare for it and prepare to help the elderly people in our society fight flu battles!
